Miata Gauge Cluster Lights Not Working. My suggestion is to find another cluster,(i know it sucks, but is nice to have an extra one.)and try replacing it. My temp gauge does not work and i know it is not the temperature sender on the block since i replaced it.

If your needle moves in a jumpy manner, the gears are not meshed correctly. Cluster gauge lights don’t work…all other little lights work (check engine light, seatbelt, brights)! Wiring at the back of the mazda instrument cluster can be found as follows.
To Open The Unit, Use A Small Flat Screwdriver To Free The Plastic Connector Housing Clips From The Flasher Unit Housing.
The speedo in the miata is manually driven by a cable from the tranny. If your needle moves in a jumpy manner, the gears are not meshed correctly. Replaced fuses and everything works except the cluster gauge lights!

Vehicles used to use a cable that would usually run from the tail shaft of the transmission to the speedometer. I'm having somewhat of an issue with my gauges, it only does this in cold weather, i have an 89 coupe 5spd, it has the hud, anyways, when i go to start it on very cold days, my gauge cluster lights and hud won't light up, the tach, temp, gas gauge still work but the hud will not turn on and the gauge lights won't either, then after the car warms up the the dash lights and hud. The only possible problem is accidentally removing the metal center pin that the gauge needle plugs into.

Remove the oil pressure gauge by removing the three screws on the back of the cluster here is a shot of the back of the cluster housing showing the flexible circuit board overlay. Last mot the only things working on my kit car dashboard were the indicator lights for full beam and fog light (test items) and the water temperature gauge. If it's not important to you that your stereo's leds dim with your dash lights, leave the orange and the orange/black disconnected.
